Overview of the Test Tools

All tests have navigation and test tools. Some test tools are available only for specific tests or questions.

This image shows a sample  test page. The top of the image shows the buttons for navigation and tools. Text boxes and arrows point to the available navigation buttons and test tools.

The following test tools are available:


This table provides a description of the Global Tools available.

Global ToolsDescription
Help [?]The ? button at the top right opens this Test Instructions and Help page.
CalculatorTo open the on-screen calculator, select the Calculator button.. This tool is available for the Physical Science test.
FormulaTo open the on-screen reference sheet, select the Formula button. This tool is avaialble for the Physical Science test.
Line ReaderTo highlight a line of text on the page, use the Line Reader tool. Select the Line Reader button. The first line of text on the screen will be highlighted blue. Select another line of text to highlight it.
Masking

To temporarily cover a section of the test screen, use the Masking tool. To use the Masking tool:

  1. Select the Masking button.
  2. Click and drag until the area you want to cover is fully selected.
  3. Release the mouse button. The masked area will become dark gray.

You can mask other areas if you want to. To close the Masking tool, select the Masking button again. It will become green. Note: This tool requires you to have the Masking accessibility feature turned on.

NotesTo open an on-screen notepad, select the Notes button. In the notepad, type comments or notes for yourself. Your notes are saved when you select the Submit and Close button on the notepad window.
Periodic TableTo open an on-screen periodic table of elements, select the Periodic Table button. This tool is available for the Physical Science test.
Zoom Buttons Select the Zoom In button to make the text and images in the test bigger. Select the Zoom Out button to make the text and images smaller again. You can zoom in and out up to four times.

This table provides a description of the Context Tools available.

Expand/Collapse Passage

Some test pages have a passage or activity on the left side of the page. You can expand this section.

  • Select the double arrow button The double arrow button shows two gray arrows pointing in opposite directions.to expand the left section so that it takes up most of the screen.
  • Select the double arrow button again to collapse the passage or activity.
Highlighter

You can highlight a section of text in a passage or test question.

Option 1: Select text on the screen. Open the context menu and select Highlight. The selected text will become yellow.

Option 2: Select text on the screen. Right-click and select Highlight. The selected text will become yellow.

Notes:

  • Text in images cannot be highlighted.
Mark for ReviewTo mark a question for review, open the context menu and select Mark for Review.
Note: Refer to the Pause Rules section to learn about when you can review questions.
Strikethrough

For multiple-choice questions, you can "cross out" an option and focus on what you think may be the right options. To use this tool, right-click on an answer option and select Strikethrough. A line will appear through the text or image.

TutorialEach question has a tutorial video that you can watch to learn more about that type of question. Open the context menu and select Tutorial. The video will open on the screen.

About Text-to-Speech

For all tests, Text-to-Speech is an accessibility feature. You can listen to test instructions, passages, and questions if this feature is turned on. If the Text-to-Speech Tracking feature is on, words in items will be highlighted as they are read aloud.

How to listen to test content:

  • To listen to a passage, open the passage context menu and select the Speak option you want. You can also select a small portion of text, such as a word, phrase, or paragraph to listen to. Select the text, open the passage context menu, and select the Speak Selection option.
  • To listen to a question or answer options, open the question context menu and select the Speak option you want.
    • To listen only to the question, select Speak Question.
    • To listen to the selected-response question and all answer options, select Speak Question and Options .
    • To listen only to the answer option, click on the answer option select Speak Option. You can also right-click on the answer option and select Speak Option. (For example, if you want to listen to answer option A, right-click on that answer option and select Speak Option A.)


Navigating the Test with Job Access With Speech (JAWS)

This section provides instructions on how students can use JAWS to navigate a test page.

Note: The first time the test loads, JAWS may start reading everything until the student stops it. However, on the next test page, the focus will be on the first item on the page.

About Test Elements

A test page has up to three landmark regions: the Banner region, the Navigation and test tools region, and the test content region. To navigate between these landmarks using JAWS, press the R key.

JAWS Keyboard Commands

Students can use the following keyboard commands to navigate within a test page. Please note that this is a subset of all available JAWS commands.

Note: The commands in this table are based on JAWS 15. Commands may be slightly different in other versions.

Note: On test pages that have multiple items, students can jump directly from one item to the next. To do so, press H and then press the Down arrow twice. The item stem will then be read aloud.

Opening a Context Menu

The first item on a test page will automatically be in focus. The instructions in this section assume the student wants to open the context menu for the active landmark element on the page and has not yet used the Tab key to navigate anywhere.

To open the context menu for a stimulus or passage:

  1. Ensure the focus is on the stimulus or passage.
  2. To navigate directly to the context menu button, press Tab twice. JAWS will read aloud "Menu has pop-up link."
  3. Press the Enter key. The context menu will open and display the list of available menu options. JAWS will read aloud the first item in the menu.
  4. To move up and down the list, press the Up and Down arrow keys. JAWS will automatically read aloud each item.
  5. To select a menu option, press Enter.

To exit the menu without making a selection, press the Esc key. JAWS will return focus to the context menu button.


To open the context menu for an item:

  1. To navigate directly to the context menu button, press Tab twice. JAWS will read aloud "Menu for # has pop-up link."
  2. Press the Enter key. The context menu will open and display the list of available menu options. JAWS will read aloud the first item in the menu.
  3. To move up and down the list, press the Up and Down arrow keys. JAWS will automatically read aloud each item.
  4. To select a menu option, press Enter.

To exit the menu without making a selection, press the Esc key. JAWS will return focus to the context menu button.


Responding to Items with JAWS

This section provides basic guidance for responding to item types that may appear on practice tests and operational assessments.

Alert: Students should review questions via an RBD or printout from a Braille embosser before responding to items.

Multiple-Choice Items

Multiple-choice items require you to select one response option. The response area will display several multiple-choice options as radio buttons. You must select a radio button.

  1. After listening to the question text, press the Tab key twice. JAWS will read aloud the option letter and option text. If the option is an image, JAWS will read the text description associated with the image.
  2. To navigate between each response option, use the Tab and Shift + Tab commands. You can also use the Up and Down arrow keys to move between options. JAWS will read aloud the corresponding option letter and option text.
  3. To select an response option in focus as your response, press space. The radio button will be selected and JAWS will read "Enter."

Multi-Select Items

Multi-select items require you to select more than one response option. The response area will display several response options as checkboxes. You must select at least one checkbox.

  1. After listening to the question text, press the Tab key twice. This will take you to the first response option. JAWS will read aloud the option letter and option text that is in focus. If the option is an image, JAWS will read the text description associated with the image.
  2. To navigate between each response option, use the Tab and Shift + Tab commands. JAWS will read aloud the corresponding option letter and option text.
  3. To select an response option in focus as your response, press space. A check mark will appear for that response option and JAWS will read "Space."

Hot Text Items

Hot text items require you to select at least one word, phrase, or sentence. For these item types, it is critical to follow the instructions provided in the item. Some items may tell you to select two responses. Others may tell you to select one response.

Note: Each selectable text area is pre-defined. If you select a phrase or sentence, all the words in that text area will automatically be marked as selected.

  1. After listening to the question text, press the Tab key twice. This will take you to the first selectable word, phrase, or sentence. JAWS will read aloud the text that is in focus.
  2. To navigate between each selectable text area, use the Tab and Shift + Tab commands. JAWS will read aloud the selectable text.
  3. To choose a selectable text area in focus as your response, press the Enter key. JAWS will announce the text is checked.

Edit Task Items

Edit task items require you to replace an incorrect selectable word or phrase. For these item types, it is critical to follow the instructions provided in the item.

Important Notes About JAWS and Edit Task Items:

It is strongly recommended that students read through an entire item before editing text. Students can listen to the item as well as read it via an RBD or printout from an embosser.

  1. Use the Down arrow to read through each line of text. If a line of text has a selectable word or phrase, JAWS will say "clickable" after the word or phrase.
  2. Navigate to each selectable text field in the item.
    • Option 1: Return to the beginning of the item.
      • Press Shift + H.
      • Press Tab to go to the first selectable text field.
    • Option 2: Move backwards through the selectable text fields in the item.
      • Press Shift + Tab.
  3. When the selectable text is in focus, press space. This will open the edit menu. JAWS will read "Edit tools dialog" and provide additional instructions.
    • Text box: Type in the replacement word or phrase.
    • Drop-down list: Use the Up and Down arrow keys to move between options in the list. JAWS will read aloud each option. To select an option, press Enter.
  4. Press Tab to navigate to the OK button in the edit menu. Press Enter. The edit menu will close and the item will be back in focus.

Open Response Items

Open-response items require you to enter text into a text box. You may be asked to write a sentence or paragraph.

  1. Read the question and then use the Tab command to move to the response area. JAWS will read "Edit, type in text."
  2. When you are done entering a response, press Tab. You will leave the text box and move to the next item on the page.

Open Response Items with Text Formatting Row

Open-response items require you to enter text into a text box. You may be asked to write a sentence, paragraph, or essay. These items include a row for formatting text. Note: You cannot use keyboard commands to access the formatting buttons.

  1. Read the question and then use the Tab command to move to the response. JAWS will read "Edit, type in text."
  2. When you are done entering a response, press Tab. You will leave the text box and move to the next item or field on the page.

Table Match Items

Table match items require you to mark at least one check box in a table. The table will have multiple rows and columns. The table row heading and column heading are not selectable. The selectable table cells have check boxes.

  1. After listening to the question text, press the Tab key twice. This will take you to the first table cell that has a check box. JAWS will read aloud the corresponding column name and row name for that table cell.
  2. To navigate to each cell that has a check box, press the Tab key. JAWS will read aloud the corresponding column and row name for each cell.
  3. To mark a check box, press space.

Navigating the Test without JAWS

This section provides instructions on how students can use keyboard commands to navigate a test page without JAWS.

About Test Elements

A test page has up to three regions: the Banner region, the Navigation and test tools region, and the test content region.
